Monkey Bar and Restaurant
Salvage an unkept historic building shell, by restoring its charm and transforming it into a thematic bar that locals would find hip and comfortable.
amaZulu Materials:
- Reed Ceiling Board
- Tre-Gai Bamboo Trim (ceiling)
- Mexican Rain Cape (thatch awning)
- Tambor Paneling - Mottled (Underside of thatch awning)
Challenge:
Because we were using natural products to create an inviting, somewhat tropical fee, we had to adhere to stringent fire codes highly monitored by the fire marshal. Somehow we also needed to capture the charm of the original building but create a retro Tiki bar theme that would attract new energy and repeat customers. The building is split level so we had to ensure the look and feel of the upstairs Monkey Bar had to complement the downstairs Waitiki Bar and Restaurant.
Strategy:
We chose materials that were a little unusual like the reed ceiling board, that gave texture and natural colors against the Retro Red accessories. All of our natural materials had to be fire retarded to meet very specific safety standards.
Results:
The bar was built on time and on budget while honoring fire codes and meeting client design expectations.
"We wanted a bar upstairs that would capitalize on the building’s
structure and capture the qualities of a relaxed local’s bar too. The
Monkey Bar turned out to be just what we wanted because it has a
beach-style comfortable atmosphere but a lot of personality too."
