FAQ: Tonkin Bamboo Fence

Can I use the all the different color fence panel options outdoors?

The best is the Natural as it is the lightest in color. The black and stained mahogany can be used in areas that do not receive as much light by natural elements.

How do I install for interior applications?

The best method is a staple gun, pulling the product snug against the structure without sag or staple the panel between poles attaching the wire between the staple and wood surface.

How durable is this fencing? how long will it last?

The Tonkin Bamboo is constructed using Tonkin cane, or tea stick bamboo. It has been used in fencing, scaffolding, piping, furniture, and construction components for thousands of years in Asia. When bamboo is processed correctly, it can last for decades.

What happens to bamboo when it ages?

UV light and summer and winter temperatures will turn bamboo silvery grey over time if exposed to the elements.

Can I clean the Tonkin Bamboo Fence Panel?

Yes. Bamboo can be cleaned, power washed and wiped. So if you want to keep your outdoor bamboo products looking great, wipe it down or power wash it once a year.

Can I stain/restore Tonkin bamboo fence panel?

Yes! Bamboo restores itself very well. In fact, it is very difficult to stain bamboo when it is first installed due to the density of its waxy outer cellulose fibers. It is recommended that bamboo is not stained until it has weathered. Grayed bamboo is perfect for staining and often times looks better than when it was new!

How do I cut the Tonkin bamboo fence panel for a shorter height or shorter width? what is the best tool to use?

The best tool to lower the height of a fence panel is a common circular saw with a plywood blade (140 teeth). If you need a section less than 8ft wide, a pair of wire cutters is all that is required. Simply cut the wire about 2 canes longer than you need, slide the extra two canes off and wrap the extra wire around the last cane.

How do I prevent Tonkin Bamboo Fence Panel from cracking?

Bamboo does have a natural tendency to crack but this can be reduced if the following steps are taken:

  • Drilling each section between nodes to release air
  • Running rebar, broomstick, or any long object through all nodes or entire pole
  • Apply sealants that are tolerable to movements in wood/bamboo to lessen cracking (consult local paint store for details)

How do I avoid discoloration?

Like any wood product, sunlight changes the color over time but a sealant with a strong UV inhibitor will protect bamboo.

How do I avoid mold/mildew?

All surfaces are subject to mildew but using a sealant with strong fungicide will minimize or even prevent this occurrence.
