Why is it important to use sustainable woods in building construction? If you are working toward LEED certification, materials make an enormous difference. If you are concerned about the deforestation of slow-growing trees, you should know your other options.
When you scrutinize the qualities that various woods have, you should be aware of the benefits of using bamboo. And not just as a necessary alternative but as one of the top choices for your construction projects.
Because it is used as a building material, many people mistake bamboo for wood, but it is a large type of grass.
Several varieties make excellent timber due to their strength. ‘Giant Japanese Timber’ bamboo has straight, thick-walled culms (culms are to bamboo as blades are to grass)–good for splitting into boards.
‘Slender crook stem’ bamboo originates from China and is also very hard and durable. It is ideal for building and many other uses.
The qualities of these bamboo species cannot be matched by traditional wood. In part, this is because of their incredible weight to weight ratio.
Bamboo species are sustainable because of how quickly they can be regrown after harvesting. To replace a forest of pine, spruce, fir, cedar or hemlock could take 30 years or more. Bamboo takes less than a third of that time to reach maturity.
This ability to grow fast makes bamboo groves more efficient and environmentally-friendly.
We are all aware of the problem of deforestation. This is when forests are cut down, and animals are left without a habitat. And this leads to decreased biodiversity with its many harmful consequences.
There is another notable problem stemming from deforestation. It is that air in deforested areas is more polluted. Because plants clean the air, cutting them down decreases air quality. A fast-growing plant like bamboo is a preferable building material because it can be replenished quickly. It can grow fast enough to continue purifying the air with little lag time.
Bamboo species can grow in many different climates, and do it with more timber per square foot than many trees. Amazingly, they grow at a rapid speed. Some varieties grow up to 4 feet in a single day.
