Building With Bamboo in Rainy Climates

Posted on: March 10th, 2014

Why Use Strong and Sturdy Bamboo in Rainy Climates?

Even though we are based in the “Sunshine State,” we tend to get a little rain now and then (or a lot!). But, even in humid climates such as Florida, there is no reason to let the elements deter you from building with bamboo for your favorite outdoor structures.

Why does Natural Bamboo benefit the environment?

amaZulu, Inc. has hand selected farmers who produce eco-friendly, high-quality natural bamboo.  Using a natural bamboo building material puts you on the cutting edge when considering the environment.

At amaZulu, Inc., we extend our legacy beyond business to the community when we partner with domestic and international organizations that create economic opportunities to reduce poverty. When building with bamboo, you  help improve the lives of the people who grow and produce these products.

Additional Benefits of Building with Bamboo

  • The species, Tre-Gai and Solid Bamboo Poles, are versatile and sturdy.
  • Since amaZulu’s bamboo products are pressure treated they are also long-lasting.
  • If desired, fire retardant can be added at the time of pressure treating for extra safety.
  • It creates an authentic atmosphere for your installations.
  • Natural coloring also adds to that authenticity.

Why must you maintain your Bamboo Structures?

You’ve decided you’re going to use bamboo for building your next outdoor structure, but you also understand that, because it’s a natural product, that it might be susceptible to the outdoor harsh elements of sunshine, rain and possibly snow.

If not maintained and left exposed to rain, sun, and extreme heat for extended periods of time, natural solid bamboo poles may be prone to discoloration, cracking and other damage. But if you want an awesome tiki bar or to liven up your yard with bamboo, you don’t have to worry about a thing!

There are some steps you can take to ensure that your natural bamboo lasts in all kinds of weather. All while keeping its beautiful, rustic shine and color.

You may not know that bamboo is classified as a grass or “wicker.” Other wickers include rattan, reed, and willow. These natural bamboo products don’t stand up very well to prolonged exposure to water and high humidity, so extra precautions should be taken when building with bamboo outdoors.

Whether you’re a zoo, resort or theme partk, you can’t afford to replace your bamboo continually due to the weather elements.  Therefore, consider applying a sealer or light stain to your outdoor bamboo furniture and structures. We recommend TWP, a sealer available at your local hardware store.

Faux Bamboo provides additional options

Another option when building with bamboo is faux bamboo! It looks nearly identical to natural bamboo but doesn’t crack or split in extreme weather conditions.  Faux bamboo can be coated with a marine grade finish that makes it great for outdoor applications.

You can examples of building with bamboo at resorts, shops, restaurants, homes, and gardens around the world.

How to Seal Your Bamboo

But before you go crazy with sealer on your bamboo, there are some things you should know. Bamboo has a natural silica layer that protects it from rainwater, but of course, because it is a natural material, it is apt to deterioration over time.

This layer may cause adhesion problems with sealers and stains so before you seal it, either wait until the waxy layer has deteriorated or sand it off yourself. You can do this by using sandpaper and sanding in the direction of the wood grain until the culm appears dull.

After you’ve sanded your bamboo, wipe it with tack cloths to make sure all of the sawdust is removed. Not only will specks of sawdust look ugly, but it will also cause adhesion problems.

After this, apply your sealer with a china brush (it comes in stains and a clear color if you want that natural look). Smooth out any sagging areas, and let it dry for two hours, then apply another coat. With proper sealant, your bamboo can last a lifetime.
